Saint Patrick’s Cemetery was founded in 1899
to serve the Irish Catholics of Saint Patrick’s parish in
Maryville, MO. It is located on Ivory Road just south of South street
about 6 blocks east of Main St. Many families from St. Benedict’s
Parish in Burlington Junction, MO about 14 miles away are also buried
at St. Patrick’s or St. Mary’s since St. Benedict’s
was a mission parish of Maryville for many years. It’s records
are kept at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Tarkio.
Saint Mary’s Cemetery is located at South and Lieber Street
in Maryville. It was founded to serve the German parishioners of
Saint Mary’s Parish in Maryville, MO. The original cemetery
was located just East and north of the old Saint Mary’s Church
(currently just north of the present Saint Gregory’s Church.
The bodies were moved to the new cemetery but not always marked
well. Some were even discovered when the new St. Gregory’s
School was built in 1963. The Franciscan Sisters from Mount Alverno
Convent are also buried at Saint Mary’s Cemetery.
Even though the two parishes of Saint Mary’s and Saint Patrick’s
were combined in 1960 to form the current Saint Gregory’s
Parish, the two cemeteries still retain their old names but are
jointly administered by one cemetery board of the Catholic Cemeteries
of Maryville, MO. Records for both cemeteries are kept at St. Gregory’s
Parish.
